Steuerkette oder katalysator

    Hallo Freunde,


    Das Auto ist ein 2008 E90 318i mit der N43 mit 72.000 km auf der Uhr. Vor ein paar Wochen begann man, sich zu verweigern, und der Verlust ist schwerwiegend. Es fängt gut an Kälte und der Leerlauf ist perfekt rund. Ich habe es nicht getrieben, da ich Angst vor weiteren Schäden habe. Ein merkwürdiger metallischer Klang kommt aus dem Motor.


    Der erste Mechaniker sagte, dass es definitiv die Timing-Kette ist, aber ich wollte eine andere Meinung als das Timing-Kit wurde 18 Monate geändert (vor 15.000 km)


    Der zweite Mechaniker sagte, dass die Steuerkette gut ist, da der Motor läuft, aber es ist der Sekundärkatalysator, der fehlerhaft ist und sollte geändert werden, da der Auspuff verstopft ist.


    Bitte helfen Sie mir, weil ich sehr verwirrt bin.


    Ich habe ein Video mit dem Handy unter dem Auto aufgenommen.

    The second catalysator is for NOx only and has nothing to do with loss of power or strange metallic sounds as there are no moving parts inside.


    Only if it would be completely destroyed or broken, pressure loss would be to high and therefore other problems could arise. But I doubt, that this is here the case.


    However, the engine can and will run properly without a NOx catalysator as well, only fuel consumption would go up as lean combustion will be deactivated.


    So, as I understood, you do not live in Germany. Therefore, it could be legally ok to remove the NOx catalysator completely and give it a try.


    My guess would be, that the problems are indeed caused by the timing chain which makes things worse as the engine itself is in danger. And that there was a change of timing chain in the near past does not help as the N43 engine is prone to many problems and defects to the timing chain system.

    Thank you greatly for your reply. I do not live in Germany. still I would prefer to keep my Katalysator in place, as I'd rather pollute less, but I will try and see how it behaves with the bolts loosened.


    Also, will visit the mechanic tomorrow for a timing chain check.
