Zitat Rob Beck (ggf. bekannt als Hersteller von Upgrade-Turbos für den N54) allgemein zu den Druckdosen am N54: "I also believe there are alot of people who are confused about what wastegate actuators are vs. what internal wastegate components are. The big problem with our turbos is premature wear in the internal wastegate components. Those are what I have completely overhauled. It adds alot of time and expense to the upgrade. Actuators alone will not fix sloppy worn out internal components, but they could help bandaid them. They may also help confuse customers into believing that their internal wastegate components have been overhauled, when in reality they just have a different new wastegate actuator."
"I have been curious to see how these things stack up against one another. So I finally got a set of the Forge units in hand and decided to compare to an original new OEM unit I have laying around.
Here are the findings:
OEM Full range of motion= .750"
Motion at vacuum applications
.300" at 2.5in/Hg
.500" at 5.0in/Hg
.700" at 7.5in/Hg
>8.0in/Hg is Full locked
Movements very smooth, predictable, and repeatable. Large range of motion should allow for more flapper movement. Small amounts of vacuum required to fully operate. Quick rod extension at vacuum reduction. BMW documented actuator adjustment procedure.
Forge Full range of motion= .550"
.075" at 2.5in/Hg
.200" at 5.0in/Hg
.375" at 7.5in/Hg
.425" at 10.0in/Hg
.475" at 12.5in/Hg
.500" at 15.0/Hg
>17.5in/Hg is Full locked
Movements not as smooth. There is a slow sticky break at Vacuum onset (ie. takes greater than 2.0in/Hg to break movement). Large amounts of vacuum required to fully operate. Slow rod extension at vacuum reduction. No known adjustment procedure, unless the BMW guidelines are to be followed (which would not make sense based on how these things operate).
LOAD Holding Stackup (Crude test):
I also ran both units up to 15.0in/Hg and pulled the rod outwards by hand to compare. For lack of having a better test available, its all I could do. In my opinion the OEM actuator has a higher/more desirable resistance to the rod being extended. They both will give, ever slightly, but the original unit seems to hold up better.
Conclusion:
In a nutshell, aside for good looks, I really do not see the advantages of using the Forge Actuators. It is going to take some very enlightening explanation of why these are better than the OEM units for me to get it, as I certainly can't see any advantages on these bench tests. I can not imagine how these things can affectively control boost."
Zitat von Tony Vargas (anderer Anbieter von Upgrade-Ladern für den N54):
"As of today I have done my own testing of the Forge actuators and I can say I 100% concur with Rob as my tests lined up with his almost perfectly except for the fact that my units did not even begin to retract til almost 10 inches of Vacuum and did so in a very jerky manner. Stock = very smooth, very predictable which is what you want with something as critical as boost control. Forge = look amazing and are well built but just not as accurate or predictable as the stock units. This is why I am choosing to adapt the stock actuators to the stage 3's if we cant figure out how to control a normal boost activated waste gate. Which I think would be a huge step forward and save a lot of headaches."
